We Are Mostly Bags of Water: Emergency Water Storage

The Biblical Mandate for Readiness

The Bible is replete with references to preparedness. It foresees potential dangers and urges you to take necessary precautions. Water, a fundamental element of life, is paramount in our emergency readiness plans.

Why Water is Crucial

Water is essential for survival. Each person requires at least 2 gallons of water per day for drinking and basic hygiene. For a family of four, this translates to a minimum of 24 gallons for three days, but ideally, store as much water as you can. This need is echoed in the teachings of the Bible, where water symbolizes life, purification, and sustenance.

Amount to Store

As noted, it’s wise to store at least two gallons of water per person per day for a minimum of three days, but ideally for two weeks. (Store as much as you can.)

In Genesis 41:34-36, Joseph advises Pharaoh to store grain during the seven years of plenty to prepare for the seven years of famine.

This story highlights the importance of storing resources in times of abundance to prepare for times of scarcity. Similarly, storing water now prepares us for future crises.

Containers

Using food-grade water storage containers is essential. Avoid glass due to its fragility; instead, opt for plastic barrels or bottles with tight-fitting lids. These should be durable and unbreakable.

“Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.”

Matthew 9:17

This scripture teaches us the importance of using appropriate containers to prevent loss.

Sanitizing Containers

Before storing water, clean containers with soap and water, then sanitize with a solution of one teaspoon of unscented liquid household bleach per quart of water. Allow them to air-dry before use.

Leviticus 11:32 emphasizes the need for cleanliness and sanitation, which are crucial to preventing contamination and ensuring safe water storage.

Storage Tips

Label containers as “drinking water” with the storage date, and replace stored water every six months. Store water in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and toxic substances.

This aligns with the biblical principle found in Isaiah 32:18, which speaks of dwelling in peaceful and secure places, underscoring the importance of safety and security in our preparations.

Accessing Water

Use clean scoops or devices to avoid contamination. Do not touch the water or container interiors with hands. The cleanliness and purity of our water are vital, as illustrated in Psalm 51:7, "Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." This verse reminds us that purity and cleanliness are of utmost importance.

A Call to Action

In these uncertain times, the Bible offers us timeless wisdom on the importance of preparedness. Water, a symbol of life and purity, is a critical component of our emergency readiness plans. By storing adequate amounts, using appropriate containers, ensuring cleanliness, and following proper storage tips, we not only secure our survival but also embody the biblical principles of prudence and charity.

By preparing diligently, we ensure that we and our families are ready for whatever challenges may come, guided by the wisdom of the scriptures.
